What students learn

Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.

English

At Kurnell Public School, our English program leads students engage with a variety of texts and compose their own, allowing them to develop essential knowledge, understanding, and skills. Through this process, students will:

  • Communicate effectively through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing, and representing.
  • Utilise language to convey meaning tailored to specific purposes, audiences, and contexts.
  • Cultivate imaginative, creative, interpretive, and critical thinking skills.
  • Express their identities and relationships with others and the world around them.
  • Reflect on their learning experiences and insights gained through their study of English.
Mathematics

At Kurnell Public School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to nurture students to build strong number skills and learn to think logically, creatively, and critically. They discover patterns, make sense of relationships, and develop problem-solving skills that will help them in everyday life and beyond.

We focus on building a strong foundation in mathematical principles, encouraging students to approach challenges with confidence and curiosity. The curriculum is structured around 3 areas:

  • Number and Algebra – Developing skills with numbers, counting, operations, and understanding patterns and relationships.
  • Measurement and Space  – Exploring shapes, spatial awareness, and measuring length, mass, capacity, time, and temperature.
  • Statistics and Probability – Collecting, organising, and interpreting data, as well as learning to understand chance and likelihood.

Students learn to work mathematically by using these processes:

  • communicating
  • understanding and fluency
  • reasoning
  • problem solving.

Making connections between maths and other subjects helps students see why maths matters and understand it more deeply. This approach supports them in using maths to solve real-world problems, both familiar and new.
